Mainly mountains - Wales - The Carneddau

Pictures from a circuit of some the western Carneddau, on 4th June 2011. It was around 25°C in the valleys, but the tops were cool and windy. The route starts by heading north along a footpath by Glen Dana, on the A5 about 100 metres east of the eastern end of Llyn Ogwen. It heads northwards for about 1.5km, then turns west to climb the eastern ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen.

Carnedd Dafydd The path leading towards Carnedd Dafydd from Pen yr Ole Wen.
Ysgolion Duon The path between Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd LLewelyn, with the cliffs of Ysgolion Duon on the left. There was a mountain marathon in progress, which explains the crowds.
Bwlch Eryl Farchog Bwlch Eryl Farchog, between Carnedd Llewelyn and Pen yr Helgi Du.
Craig yr Ysfa Bwlch Eryl Farchog, looking north towards Craig yr Ysfa.
Pen yr Helgi Du The path up Pen yr Helgi Du. It's quite steep in places. Once the summit of Pen yr Helgi Du has been reached, there's a couple of kilometres of gently sloping path back to the A5 at SH691603.

Pictures from a 7-hour loop through the central Carneddau in June 2011. Although this area contains some of the highest mountains in Wales, such as Foel Grach, the terrain is mainly grassy slopes rather than the steep rocky crags found elsewhere in Snowdonia. It's a bit like a higher version of Dartmoor, and can be quite difficult to navigate around in poor visibility. The route starts at the Aber Falls nature reserve (SH664719).

Aber Falls A path at SH669704 which leads from the edge of the nature reserve, across scree slopes, and up into the valley of Afon Goch above Aber Falls. Part of the Falls can be seen on the right.
Bera Mawr The Afon Goch valley, with Bera Mawr (794 metres) in the distance.
Bera Mawr Llwytmor (849 metres), seen from the east in the the Afon Goch valley.
